Then he nodded. “Congratulations.”
“On what?”
“You earned their respect.”
I snorted. “I don’t care.”
“I know.” A smile teased at the corners of his lips. “They saw that too and because of that, they fear you now.”

**EXCERPT**

“I may be an asshole, but I’m an asshole you can trust.” He smirked as he reached behind him and then placed a cold bottle in my hand. “I promise.” He took my other hand and led me back downstairs.

Maybe it wasn’t a great decision, but I gave in. The fight was always in me to survive and for once, I didn’t want to fight. I wanted to be watched over. If he volunteered for that position, so be it. Brian never watched over me. I watched over him and Jace had rarely been around.

When he sat on the couch, I curled up next to him and enjoyed my place among his group of friends. As the morning and afternoon passed by, I heard and saw the respect they had for Tray. They listened when he spoke. Everyone turned to him and no one ignored him. They genuinely liked him.

People had never genuinely liked Brian or Jace. Jace was feared. He was respected, but I didn’t know if anyone in his life liked him. It was the opposite for Brian. He was tolerated. He was a hothead. No one knew when he would explode and so he earned a reputation as being unpredictable. He was met with caution wherever he went.

It was an alien feeling, watching this different world unfold before me.

I liked it.

Taryn Matthews is finally getting a forever family. After being in the foster system her entire life, she is being adopted by a family that has a daughter her age and a younger son. She is moving to another town, away from the poverty, crime and drugs that has encircled her life the last few years. She also has to leave behind the two people who have been the only constant in her life, her ex-boyfriend Brian and his older brother Jace.
Fitting in at her new school is challenging. Her new family is quite wealthy and her sister is part of the “in crowd” at the high school. Taryn has never been part of the in crowd. When one of the top guys, Tray, asks for her help in breaking into her old school, she at first refuses. Not only because she is trying to leave her old lifestyle behind, but she is also uncomfortable with how her body is reacting to him when he is close by. When Taryn relents and agrees to help him, she returns to the town she left behind. Things have started to change at her old high school and not everything or even everyone is as they seem. The more Taryn discovers, the more questions begin to arise, each answer only bringing two more questions in its wake. With Tray’s help, can she discover what is really going on, not only with her old friends but also with her new family? Or will the truth destroy everything she thought she knew about the past and wanted in her future?
Tijan is masterful in creating an intricate story that twists and turns, so you never see what is coming. Love the characters and although I didn’t really like Tray in the very beginning, he grew on me and loved him by the end. But Jace, I loved him from the start and I was very happy with the ending. Great story 4.5 stars.
