My heels clicked along the marble floor of the massive foyer as I followed the directions from the gold plated sign elegantly scripted with the names of Mulligan and Blythe. They even sounded like attorney names, I thought, smiling. I paused, standing just inside the doorway of the vast ballroom, trying to find my crew among the many people already gathered inside. It was definitely a party as the place was packed. I was so caught up in looking for them that I didn’t notice someone standing behind me until I wobbled unsteadily in my heels, taking a step back only to connect with a solid wall of muscle. As soon as those hands touched me, I knew.
“Have you already been drinking, Kara?” a voice asked.
Devon’s raspy timber assaulted my ears, sliding like smooth silk along the most intimate parts of my body. My reaction was instantaneous; a flash fire in high wind. My face flushed. Myheart rate accelerated. My breaths grew shallow. He’d always had this effect on me. Trying not to let him sense how much his nearness distracted me, I stepped forward feeling the sensation of his calloused hands slide along my skin as his fingers slipped from my arms. I shivered and forced a bright smile as I bravely turned around to face him.
This was it. Game face in place.
“Not yet, Devon,” I replied, noticing the way his eyes leisurely drifted along my features. He had no business staring at me with that look in his eyes. I wasn’t his anymore. He’d thrown me away. I straightened my shoulders, standing taller as if preparing myself for battle, and noticed his smug expression. His gaze was momentarily distracted by my girls. It was good to know that he wasn’t as immune to my charms as he would have liked me to believe. “Eyes up here, buddy,” I saucily reminded him.
He didn’t even have the grace to look ashamed that he’d been caught checking me out. There was nothing shameful about Devon. Well, except for his behavior tonight and the way he filled out the gray suit that he wore. His full lips curved into a wicked grin causing the simmering warmth in my stomach to spread like molten lava throughout my entire body and sending a shock to my system. It would be so easy just to let myself get lost in those glacier blues of his, to let him cool the fire he’d started inside of me. I had to forcibly remind myself —he wasn’t mine anymore. He belonged to someone else.

The soft strumming of a guitar immediately assaulted my senses, but that wasn’t what made the hair at the end of my arms stand at attention. I closed my eyes needing to check my emotions and the thoughts that attacked my mind at rapid speed.
One right after the other.
They were disastrous and unforgiving.
The strumming of the guitar was effortless and defined. I would recognize it anywhere. No one could play like she could.
No one.
That voice…
It was smooth like silk but raw enough to give you chills.
That song…
Would be a permanent reminder of what I lost.
That night…
Would forever haunt me. My days and nights.
God… I couldn’t think of that night without my cock getting hard and the shame engulfing me almost simultaneously. Metallica’s lyrics of Nothing Else Matters took me back to another time, another place, where I pretended that she was mine…
I was always hers.
Always.
Her face…
Her eyes…
Her body…
I remembered it all, and I hadn’t even looked up to see her. I didn’t have to. She was engrained in my mind. In my heart. In my soul.
She sang the chorus over again with the emotions bleeding off the strings of her guitar and her voice. The guitar solo followed making the crowd scream and cheer for her talent. Her energy was fucking contagious, it always had been. I felt it all around me even though I still hadn’t opened my eyes to take her in. I knew she was biting her fucking lip, it didn’t matter how many damn times I told her she was going to bite it off. I’d memorized the feel of her lips against my mouth the way I’d take that same goddamn lip and bite on it myself.
Wanting a piece of her.
Needing a piece of her.
Her voice dropped to a soft tone, as did her guitar. The song ended and the crowd went even more wild and ravenous for her.
“Well, hello there fucking Nashville!”
They hollered higher and louder. She always knew how to work a crowd.
“Welcome to Bootleggers! Who’s gettin’ fucked up tonight?”
“Yeah!” they shouted.
“Who’s gettin’ fucking laid tonight?”
They shouted again, whistling and clapping that time. I shook my head with a smile I didn’t bother trying to hide.
“That’s what I’m talking about! Down and dirty in the fuckin’ South!” she yelled in the same southern drawl she hated as a child.
“I’m going to take a little break—”
“Booooooo!”
She giggled and my cock twitched.
“I know, darlins’, I’m too fucking pretty to look at. I’ll be back, I promise! In the meantime buy me a fuckin’ shot! My name’s Kid.”
I immediately looked up, right at her. I swear to God my chest seized and she literally took my goddamn breath away. Wearing short daisy dukes and a miniscule shirt that had “Whiskey Makes Me Frisky” written across her breasts. The damn thing looked like it was as old as me. Her entire stomach bare, her belly button now pierced and her long dark hair cascading down her back, almost touching her ass. The tiny frame that I fucking loved was still the same, but she looked grown up. Older. Her legs, her fucking legs. I remembered them wrapped around me and I had to shake my head to erase the images that had my cock hard and my heart heavy.

Excerpt

“Wait, Mackenzie!” Tyler cried out after me. “Tell me what you want me to say and I’ll say it! Letting you walk away from me once was the biggest mistake of my life. I won't do it again.”

I spun around just as I was about to open the front door. “You let me walk away from you?” I hissed, my teeth clenched.

“That’s not what I meant.” He ran his hands through his dark brown hair and I could see the desperation wash over him. “What I meant to say is all the lies, all of it… I’m so sorry I put you through it. But do you think I regret any of it?” His eyes grew more intense and impassioned, his chest heaving as he poured his heart out to me. “Not for a second.”

I glared at him, waiting for him to explain.

“If it wasn’t for all the lies, for my assignment, I never would have met you, so I’m not going to say I regret a fucking second of any of it. I don’t care what it takes to win back your heart. You can push me away all you want. You can tell me you’ll never forgive me, that there will never be an us again, but I will always come back for you. A hundred times. A thousand times. I will fight for us until I take my last breath.”

He stepped toward me, grabbing my hand in his, caressing my knuckles in such a delicate way that made me want to melt into a puddle.

“Please, Mackenzie…” He leaned toward me, brushing his lips against my forehead, kissing me so delicately, so lightly. “Serafina,” he whispered, “tell me what it will take and I’ll do it.”

Despite everything he had just said, I simply couldn’t let him back in. Relationships were based on trust, and Tyler took my trust and used it against me. I couldn’t forget that, no matter how much my skin yearned for his touch.

“You want to know what it’s going to take?” I asked softly, freeing my hand from his grasp.

He nodded, nervous anticipation radiating through his body as he looked at me with eager eyes.

“It’ll take one more time,” I murmured, opening the door. Peering over my shoulder, I saw his deflated expression. “It will always take one more time.”
